Inspiration

I was watching some YouTube videos when I came across a video of someone showing off something similar to the cube I created. I looked online and found some more people with the same idea who were trying to sell it as a pre-order item. That's when I decided to just build it myself.

The Frame

The frame and supporting structure is made of wood that was then spray painted matte black. The LEDs line the two inner frame walls allowing it to create a square for each face of the cube.

Mirrors

The six mirrors surrounding the frame are made of acrylic. For this project a special mirror known as a two-way mirror was used because of its unique lighting properties. When one side of the mirror is bight lit the other side becomes very hard to see or in this case almost transparent. These unique properties allow majority of the light to reflect multiple time with in the cube giving it an infinity effect.

LEDs

Unlike traditional LEDs that take a red, green, and blue voltage value the LEDs use in this project are individually addressable. What does this mean? It means that each individual LED can be set to a different color. This is done by using a ground, data, and 5-volt wire. The data line communicates with the microchip in the middle of the led diode. The microchip then apples specific voltages to the red, green, and blue portions of the diode creating the color you see. Without individually addressable LEDs the cool animations wouldn't be possible.
